The Chain Braid Tutorial

Let’s Try This Chain Braid Tutorial In Just A Few Simple Steps

It’s no secret that braids are still one of the hottest hair trends right now. From runways to city sidewalks, braids are EVERYWHERE!

This is why we tracked down Mario Russo, owner and lead stylist of Salon Mario Russo in Boston. This renowned hair expert is always on the lookout for a fresh take on the braid. Enter the chain braid a la Mario!

Russo says this pretty plait is a super easy look to execute with any hair type. We love this fun, chic style because it has just the right amount of messiness and it’s perfect for any occasion. So what’s not to love? Let’s get to styling!

The Chain Braid Tutorial:

1. Start with day old hair. To create volume, curl sections of hair at the crown of your head using hot rollers, a round brush, or a curling iron. If you have fine hair and would like even more volume, lightly tease the hair at your crown after you curl it.

2. Curl all of your hair with a 1.5-inch curling iron to help with the fullness of the braid.

3. Pull back the top section of hair near the crown as if creating a half-up half-down style. Split that hair into two sections. Tie the two sections in a knot as if you were tying your shoelaces.

4. Add strands of hair from each side (like you would for a French braid) and knot the two sections of hair again. Continue this “French knotting” technique until you have no more hair to add. Secure the end with a clear elastic.

5. Gently tug and stretch the knots apart to create a more messy and textured finish.

6. Spray your chain braid with a light working spray that will keep it looking soft while still holding everything place. Mario suggests Bumble & Bumble Does It All Styling Spray.

BONUS STYLING TIP: Want to dress this style up a bit more? Tuck your chain braid under and secure it with bobby pins to create a messy-chic chignon.
